Stock, Semi-Custom or Custom

Three tiers, three honest answers. We will tell you when you do not need the expensive one.

Stock, Semi-Custom or Custom
TierLead timeFits your walls?Best for
StockAbout 1 weekFixed widths, filler stripsNew construction, square rooms, tight budgets
Semi-custom3 to 6 weeksModified stock sizesMost standard remodels
Custom4+ weeksBuilt to the actual roomOlder homes, odd layouts, estate work

The case for custom in Scottsdale is specific, not aspirational. Houses in Central Scottsdale and the Shea Corridor built in the 1970s have settled for fifty years, and their walls are not plumb or square. A run of fixed-width boxes leaves gaps that get covered with filler strips. Custom boxes are scribed to the wall that is actually there.

Custom also solves a quiet storage loss. Where two mass-produced face-frame cabinets meet, the stiles double up and cost you about an inch and a half of usable opening at every joint. Across a full kitchen that adds up to a drawer bank you paid for and cannot use.

Framed or Frameless

Face-frame is the traditional American build: a narrow hardwood frame around the front of the box. Frameless, sometimes called European, uses the carcase panels themselves and was developed in Europe in the 1950s and 60s.

The practical difference is capacity. A 12-inch frameless cabinet accepts a 10-inch drawer. A face-frame box of the same outside width takes 8.5. Multiply that across every cabinet in the room.

Face-frame still wins on some traditional and transitional designs where an inset door and a visible frame are the point. We build both and will say which suits your house.

Construction Spec

What we build and why it matters:

Carcases. Plywood, not particle board, particularly on sink runs. Particle board is dimensionally stable and cheap right up until it gets wet, and then it swells and stops holding screws.

Doors. Frame-and-panel construction with mortise-and-tenon, cope-and-stick or mitered joints, where the panel floats in the frame to allow for seasonal wood movement. Shaker, raised panel, slab and glass-front with muntins are all standard. Solid maple, cherry and oak, or veneer over a stable core.

Finishes. Sprayed lacquer over primer for painted work. Water or solvent-based stain where the grain should show. We avoid thermofoil, which looks glossy and cannot be repaired once it is damaged.

Hardware. 35 mm European cup hinges with six-way adjustment and quick-release, soft-close on every door and drawer, and full-extension metal glides rated to 75 to 100 pounds. Older three-quarter-extension slides leave the back of every drawer permanently out of reach, which is why so many kitchens feel short on storage when they are not.

Interior fittings. Lazy Susans, corner pull-outs, tray dividers, pull-down upper mechanisms, drawer organizers. Designed in at drawing stage rather than bought later and made to fit.

Air quality. Low-formaldehyde and no-added-formaldehyde panels with water-based finishes. Cabinetry is the main source of indoor off-gassing in a tightly built modern house, and it is worth specifying.

Standard Dimensions

Useful for picturing a layout before drawings exist.

Standard Dimensions
CabinetDepthHeight
Base24 in34.5 in, to meet a 36 in counter
Wall12 in30 or 36 in
Tall / pantry24 inTo ceiling

Backsplash space between counter and wall cabinets is 18 inches standard. Toe kick runs 3 to 4 inches. Taking wall cabinets to the ceiling with a stacked top row and crown, rather than leaving a soffit gap, is usually the cheapest storage gain available in any kitchen.

Custom Cabinet Cost in Scottsdale

Estimated ranges, priced by linear foot of cabinetry.

Custom Cabinet Cost in Scottsdale
TierEstimated RangeNotes
Stock installed$150 to $350 per linear ftFixed sizes, fast
Semi-custom installed$350 to $650 per linear ftModified sizes, wider finish choice
Custom installed$650 to $1,400+ per linear ftBuilt to the room, any species or finish
Typical full kitchen, custom$40,000 to $120,00025 to 35 linear feet, plus interior fittings

What moves it: species and finish, since hand-applied glazing and distressing are priced by the hour; interior fittings; door style complexity; and whether the run includes tall units, which cost more per foot than base cabinets.

If your existing boxes are sound plywood and only the doors are dated, refacing cabinet doors costs far less and takes under a week. Cabinets are normally installed as part of full-scope kitchen work or estate-level kitchen work, with the countertop templated to the installed boxes afterward. Island cabinetry is covered under custom island installation, and everything begins with layout planning and renderings.

Service Areas

We install custom cabinetry throughout Scottsdale, 85250 through 85269, with much of our scribing work in the 1970s Shea Corridor and Central Scottsdale housing stock. We also work Paradise Valley estate kitchens, Cave Creek's hand-plastered custom homes, and Arcadia's midcentury ranches. See Scottsdale Kitchen Remodeling Pros.

Why Homeowners Choose Our Cabinet Work

Arizona ROC licensed, bonded and insured, with general liability coverage in force. Measured shop drawings you approve before anything is built. In-house installation crews rather than a delivery and a phone number. We order first and demolish second, so you are not living without a kitchen while a shop builds your boxes. Every door adjusted on site at the end, which is the step most installers skip.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do custom cabinets cost in Scottsdale?

Estimated $650 to $1,400 or more per linear foot installed, which puts a typical 25 to 35 foot kitchen at $40,000 to $120,000. Semi-custom runs $350 to $650 per foot and stock $150 to $350.

How long is the lead time?

Four weeks minimum for custom, and longer for complex packages or specialty finishes. Stock arrives in about a week. We order before demolition rather than after.

Do I actually need custom cabinets?

Not always. If your walls are square and standard sizes fit, semi-custom is the better value and we will say so. Custom earns its price in older houses, odd layouts and rooms where every inch counts.

Framed or frameless, which should I choose?

Frameless gives you more usable space: a 12-inch frameless box takes a 10-inch drawer against 8.5 in a face-frame box. Face-frame suits traditional designs with inset doors. We build both.

Plywood or particle board boxes?

Plywood, especially under a sink. Particle board holds up fine until it meets water, and then it swells and loses its grip on screws.

Can you match my existing cabinets for an addition?

Sometimes, on species and door style. Finish matching on aged cabinetry is difficult and we will be honest about how close it will get before you commit.

Do you install cabinets other people supplied?

Yes, though we will inspect them first and tell you what we find. We do not warrant boxes we did not build.

Are you licensed and insured for custom cabinet installation work?

Yes. We are Arizona ROC licensed and carry general liability insurance, certificate on request.

Work that pairs with this

Clients comparing options usually read kitchen bump-outs and additions alongside this page, and a new kitchen backsplash comes up often enough to be worth a look before you decide. If the scope turns out to be broader than one room, removing the kitchen wall is the wider version of the same conversation.

We also handle bathroom additions and high-end master bath renovation. Combining a kitchen and a bathroom into one contract is easier to sequence and cheaper to mobilize than running them a year apart.
