We offer large-format tile setting and full membrane waterproofing. Our team provides measured clearance planning and tightly sequenced scheduling, delivering compact bathrooms that feel twice their size for Scottsdale homes and watertight results for both residential and commercial projects. Backed by an Arizona ROC licensed, bonded and insured contracting team, we have completed kitchen and bathroom projects of every size, from 35 square foot hall baths to compact en suites.

From swapping a swinging door for a pocket door to recover 9 square feet to running floor tile straight into a curbless shower so the eye never stops, our team handles every detail. Serving Scottsdale, Old Town, Fountain Hills and Arcadia, we deliver efficient, clever, professional work on every small bathroom.

Making a Small Bathroom Feel Bigger

Every one of these is a construction decision, and together they change a room more than any paint color will.

Go curbless. A shower with no curb and no threshold lets the floor tile run continuously from the door into the shower. The eye reads one floor instead of two zones, and the room gains apparent size immediately. It also happens to be the best accessibility decision available. This is a fully waterproofed floor with a slope to the drain rather than a raised pan.

Clear glass, no frame. A frameless clear glass panel keeps the sight line running to the far wall. A framed enclosure with obscured glass cuts the room in half visually. If the budget is tight, a single fixed panel with no door is cheaper than a hinged enclosure and works better in a small room.

Wall-hung fixtures. A wall-hung vanity and a wall-hung toilet with a concealed carrier both leave visible floor underneath. Continuous visible floor is the single strongest cue that a room is larger than it is. A wall-hung toilet also gains you roughly 6 to 9 inches of projection over a standard floor-mount.

Large-format tile. Fewer grout lines means fewer visual interruptions. The old advice that small tile suits small rooms is backwards. Large-format porcelain on floor and walls, with matching grout, is the move.

Pocket or barn door. A standard 30-inch door sweeps about 9 square feet of floor that then cannot hold anything. In a 40 square foot bathroom that is a quarter of the room. A pocket door recovers all of it.

One light source is not enough. Even, bright lighting makes a small room read as open. At the mirror, two sources separated by at least a foot rather than a single downlight overhead, which shadows faces and makes the room feel like a closet.

Niches instead of shelves. A recessed niche between studs stores what a shelf would without projecting into the shower.

The Layout Constraints

Small bathroom design is clearance arithmetic. The figures we design to:

The Layout Constraints
ElementMinimumComfortable
Clear floor in front of the toilet21 in30 in
Toilet centerline to any wall or fixture15 in18 in
Clear floor in front of the vanity21 in30 in
Shower interior30 by 30 in36 by 48 in
Door swing clearanceFull leafPocket door

A 5 by 8 foot bathroom, the classic hall bath footprint, is 40 square feet and holds a tub, toilet and vanity with nothing to spare. Getting more out of it means making the fixtures smaller or the boundaries different, not rearranging the same pieces.

When the Answer Is to Change the Footprint

Sometimes the room is simply too small for what you want, and the honest answer is to take space from somewhere else. Options, in order of cost:

  • Absorbing a linen closet or a hall closet backing onto the bathroom
  • Moving a non-bearing partition a foot or two into an adjacent room
  • Combining two small bathrooms into one good one
  • Adding a bathroom elsewhere, see adding a bath where none exists

Moving a wall is significantly cheaper than most people assume when it is non-bearing and nothing plumbed is in it. See bathroom layout reconfiguration.

Estimated ranges.

Small Bathroom Remodel Cost in Scottsdale
ScopeEstimated RangeNotes
Surface refresh, same layout$8,000 to $18,000Tile, vanity, toilet, fixtures, paint
Full remodel, same layout$18,000 to $32,000New shower build, full waterproofing, all new
Tub-to-curbless-shower conversion$12,000 to $26,000Floor rebuild for slope and drain
Full remodel with a wall moved$30,000 to $55,000Framing, plumbing relocation, slab work

Small rooms are not cheap per square foot, and it is worth understanding why. A bathroom has the same number of trades, the same waterproofing requirement, the same permit and the same fixture count whether it is 40 square feet or 140. Only the tile and flooring quantities scale down. Expect a high cost per square foot and a low total.

Waterproofing Does Not Scale Down

Same standard, small room. Tile is not waterproof and grout is porous, so a bonded membrane covers every wet wall and the shower floor before tile, with corners, changes of plane and niches reinforced. Curbless showers raise the bar further, because the waterproofed area extends beyond the shower zone across the whole floor.

We leak test before tile. Ask any contractor bidding your job to name their system and show it as a line item.

Timeline

Two to four weeks of construction for most small bathrooms, plus two to four weeks of ordering. Glass is measured after tiling and adds two to three weeks at the end.

A single-bathroom house needs sequencing care. Tell us at the estimate and we will compress the fixture-out window as far as the work allows.

Why Homeowners Choose Us for Small Bathrooms

Arizona ROC licensed, bonded and insured, with general liability coverage in force. A drawn layout with clearances before ordering, which matters more in a small room than a large one. Waterproofing named and leak tested. In-house tile crews who can hold a grout line across a curbless transition. Tight sequencing so a single-bathroom house is not out of service longer than necessary.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a small bathroom remodel cost in Scottsdale?

Estimated $18,000 to $32,000 for a full remodel keeping the layout, $8,000 to $18,000 for a surface refresh, and $30,000 to $55,000 where a wall moves.

Why is a small bathroom almost as expensive as a big one?

Because the trade count, the waterproofing requirement, the permit and the fixture count are the same. Only tile and flooring quantities scale with size, and those are a minority of the cost.

What is the single best change for making it feel bigger?

A curbless shower with a clear frameless panel, so the floor tile runs continuously and the sight line reaches the far wall. Wall-hung fixtures are second.

Should I use small tile in a small bathroom?

No. Large-format tile with matching grout has fewer visual interruptions and makes the room read larger. The old advice is backwards.

Can I fit a shower where my tub is?

Almost always, and it usually gains usable space. A tub-to-curbless-shower conversion runs an estimated $12,000 to $26,000 because the floor is rebuilt for slope and drainage.

Will a pocket door really make a difference?

Yes. A standard swinging door sweeps roughly 9 square feet of floor. In a 40 square foot room that is a quarter of the space you cannot use for anything else.

How long will I be without the bathroom?

Two to four weeks of construction. If it is the only bathroom in the house, tell us at the estimate and we will sequence to compress it.

Are you licensed and insured for small bathroom remodeling work?

Yes. We are Arizona ROC licensed and carry general liability insurance.
