The Part That Matters Most: Waterproofing
Everything else in a bathroom is finish. Waterproofing is the part that decides whether the room lasts twenty years or fails in five, and it is completely invisible once the tile is on. It is also the step that gets cut when a bid comes in low.
Here is the thing most homeowners do not know: tile is not waterproof and grout is porous. Water passes through the grout joints routinely. What keeps it out of your framing is the waterproofing layer underneath, and the wet areas of a bathroom need that layer covering walls and floor before any tile is set. Multiple layers can be used, and on a shower a pan sits beneath the tile as the second line of defense.
What that means in practice:
- A bonded waterproofing membrane over the substrate on all wet walls and the shower floor
- A correctly sloped shower pan, because water that does not reach the drain sits in the pan
- Sealed and reinforced corners, changes of plane and penetrations, which is where failures start
- Waterproofed niches, benches and curbs, which are the most common leak points after corners
- A leak test before tile, so a failure is found when it costs nothing to fix
When you get bids, ask each contractor to describe their waterproofing system by name. The answer tells you almost everything about the bid.
Bathroom Remodel Cost in Scottsdale
Estimated ranges.
| Type | Estimated Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Powder room | $5,000 to $15,000 | Toilet, sink, tile, lighting |
| Guest or hall bath, surface refresh | $12,000 to $25,000 | Same layout, new finishes |
| Guest or hall bath, full remodel | $25,000 to $45,000 | New shower, vanity, tile, fixtures |
| Master bath, standard | $35,000 to $70,000 | Tile shower, double vanity, separate tub |
| Master bath, luxury | $70,000 to $200,000+ | Stone, steam, custom millwork, heated floor |
| Wet room conversion | $25,000 to $60,000 | Full-room waterproofing, linear drain |
| Bathroom addition | $40,000 to $120,000+ | New footprint, plumbing, structure, permits |
The three things that move a bathroom budget most: whether fixtures move, because relocating a toilet drain on a slab-on-grade Scottsdale house means cutting and trenching concrete; tile selection and size, since small mosaics and handmade tile take far more labor to set than large format; and whether anything structural changes.
Ask for a line-item estimate. Waterproofing should appear as its own line. If it does not, ask why.
How Long It Takes
| Type | Construction time |
|---|---|
| Powder room | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Guest or hall bath | 3 to 5 weeks |
| Master bath | 5 to 8 weeks |
| Luxury master suite | 8 to 14 weeks |
| Bathroom addition | 12 to 20 weeks plus permitting |
Add two to six weeks of ordering ahead of any of these. Tile, stone, glass and specialty fixtures all have lead times, and shower glass in particular is measured after the tile is set, which adds a further two to three weeks at the end of the job.
Showers, Tubs and Fixtures
Shower types. A standard stall with a door or curtain to contain spray. A shower-tub combination, which saves space and serves both functions. A dedicated shower room or wet room, which has no raised containment and instead slopes the whole floor to the drain. Curbless and roll-in showers, which remove the step entirely.
Tubs. Alcove tubs fit a three-wall recess and are the standard secondary-bath fixture. Freestanding and clawfoot tubs are a design statement and need floor structure and a floor-mounted or wall-mounted filler. Drop-in and undermount tubs sit in a built deck. Materials run from cast iron, which holds heat best and weighs the most, through porcelain-enameled steel, thermoformed acrylic and fiberglass-reinforced polyester. Clawfoot styles, including roll rim, slipper and double-ended, were at their most popular from the 1880s through the 1930s and read as period-correct rather than contemporary.
The tub question. In most secondary bathrooms, keeping a tub protects resale. In a master suite, replacing a rarely used garden tub with a larger shower is one of the most consistently satisfying changes we make. If the house has at least one other tub, the master tub is usually optional.
Electrical. Ground-fault circuit interrupter protection is required in bathrooms under US building code. Lighting should be even and bright, with at least two sources at the mirror separated by a foot or more, and fixtures in wet zones rated for splash exposure.
Bathroom Types, Defined
Useful when you are describing what you have to a contractor.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Full bath | Bath or shower, or both, plus toilet and sink |
| Three-quarter bath | Toilet, sink and shower, no tub |
| Half bath / powder room | Toilet and sink only |
| En suite | Attached to and entered only from a bedroom |
| Master bath | Shower and tub, adjoining the primary bedroom |
| Jack-and-Jill | Between two bedrooms, shared, often with two basins |
| Family or hall bath | Full bath entered from a corridor |
| Wet room | Fully waterproofed room with an open shower |

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Scottsdale?
Estimated $5,000 to $15,000 for a powder room, $25,000 to $45,000 for a full guest bath remodel, and $35,000 to $70,000 for a standard master bath. Luxury master suites run $70,000 to $200,000 or more.
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
One to two weeks for a powder room, three to five for a guest bath, five to eight for a master. Add two to six weeks of ordering ahead of that, and two to three weeks at the end for shower glass, which is measured after tiling.
Why is waterproofing such a big deal?
Because tile is not waterproof and grout is porous. Water reaches the framing unless a membrane underneath stops it. It is invisible once tiled, which is exactly why it gets cut from cheap bids, and why a failure costs far more to fix than it did to do properly.
Can I move the toilet or shower?
Yes, but on a slab-on-grade house it means cutting and trenching concrete for the drain. That single decision is often the difference between a $25,000 and a $45,000 bathroom.
Do you offer free estimates for bathroom remodeling?
Yes. In-home measurement and a written line-item estimate at no cost and no obligation.
Are you licensed and insured for bathroom remodeling work?
Yes. We are Arizona ROC licensed and carry general liability insurance, with a certificate available on request.
Do you pull permits?
Yes. Plumbing, electrical and any structural change require a City of Scottsdale permit, and applications and inspections are part of our contract.
Should I keep the tub in my master bath?
If the house has another tub, most clients are happier trading a rarely used garden tub for a larger shower. If it is the only tub in the house, keeping one protects resale.
Can I use the bathroom during the remodel?
No, that bathroom is out of service for the duration. We sequence multi-bathroom projects so you always have one working.
How do I compare bids fairly?
Ask every contractor to name their waterproofing system and show it as a separate line. That one question separates the bids more reliably than anything else on the page.

Work that pairs with this
Clients comparing options usually read accessible bathroom remodeling alongside this page, and historic and vintage bathroom renovation comes up often enough to be worth a look before you decide. If the scope turns out to be broader than one room, renovating a powder room is the wider version of the same conversation.
We also handle our custom cabinet work and building an outdoor kitchen. Combining a bathroom and a kitchen into one contract is easier to sequence and cheaper to mobilize than running them a year apart.
