We offer doorway widening and closet absorption. Our team provides measured layout drawings and full permit management, delivering bathrooms that finally make sense for Scottsdale homes and code-compliant, watertight results for both residential and commercial projects. Backed by an Arizona ROC licensed, bonded and insured contracting team, we have completed kitchen and bathroom projects of every size, from single fixture moves to complete suite replanning.
From cutting and trenching a concrete slab for a new toilet drain to re-venting a relocated fixture so it drains properly rather than gurgling, our team handles every detail. Serving Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Arcadia and Fountain Hills, we deliver careful, permitted, professional work on every reconfiguration.
When the Problem Is the Plan, Not the Finishes
Some bathrooms are not dated, they are badly arranged. New tile does not fix any of these:
- The toilet is the first thing you see from the bedroom door
- The vanity is too small for two people and there is space wasted elsewhere
- A garden tub nobody uses takes a quarter of the room while the shower is cramped
- The door swing collides with the vanity drawers
- There is no room for a walker or a wheelchair
- Two small bathrooms exist where one good one would serve better
- The linen closet backs onto the bathroom and holds towels you never reach for
If you recognize your bathroom in that list, a surface remodel will leave you with the same frustrations in nicer materials.
What Moving Things Actually Costs
The honest hierarchy, cheapest to most expensive, and it is almost entirely about drains.
Free or nearly free. Swapping fixtures in place. Changing a vanity width. Re-hanging a door to swing the other way. Moving a light or an outlet.
Moderate. Moving a sink, since the drain is small and the run is often short. Removing a non-bearing partition that has no plumbing in it. Absorbing a closet.
Significant. Moving a shower or tub drain. The drain is larger, needs its own venting, and on a slab-on-grade house means cutting concrete.
The big one. Moving a toilet. The largest drain in the house, with the least tolerance for a poor slope and the strictest venting requirement. On a slab-on-grade Scottsdale house this means cutting the slab, trenching, running new drain and vent, inspection, and repouring. It is the single most expensive line in most reconfigurations, and it is the reason two otherwise identical bathrooms can differ by $20,000.
This matters here because almost everything in the Phoenix metro is built slab-on-grade. There is no crawlspace to run new drains through. Knowing that before you design saves real money: a layout that keeps the toilet where it is and moves everything else around it is often 80% as good for half the cost.
Where the Extra Space Comes From
If the room itself is too small, the space has to come from somewhere.
A linen or hall closet. The most common source. A closet backing onto the bathroom is usually separated by a non-bearing partition with nothing plumbed in it, which makes it the cheapest square footage available.
An adjacent bedroom. Taking two or three feet off an oversized bedroom is often invisible in the bedroom and transformative in the bathroom.
Combining two bathrooms. Two cramped baths sharing a wall can become one good one, though it costs you a bathroom count, which affects resale.
A hallway. Occasionally a corridor is wider than it needs to be.
Whether a wall is load-bearing decides the cost. Interior partitions in a bathroom are frequently non-bearing, but not always, and it is checked rather than assumed.
Reconfiguration Cost in Scottsdale
Estimated ranges. These are for the reconfiguration work as part of a full remodel.
| Scope | Estimated Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fixture swaps and vanity resize, no drain moves | $18,000 to $30,000 | Full remodel, plumbing stays put |
| Move sink and shower, toilet stays | $30,000 to $50,000 | Slab trenching for the shower drain |
| Move the toilet | $45,000 to $80,000 | Slab cut, new drain and vent, inspection, repour |
| Absorb a closet, non-bearing wall moved | $35,000 to $65,000 | Framing, plumbing, electrical, finishes |
| Combine two bathrooms into one | $55,000 to $110,000 | Two rooms demolished, one rebuilt, drains reworked |
| Full suite replan with structure | $80,000 to $180,000+ | Bearing wall changes, engineering, permits |
Permits and Inspections
Every reconfiguration is permitted work. Moving drains, adding circuits and altering framing all require a City of Scottsdale permit and inspections at rough-in and at completion.
The rough-in inspection is the one that matters: it happens after the drains, vents and wiring are in and before anything is closed up. Work that has been covered without inspection is a genuine problem at sale, and correcting it means opening finished walls.
We file the applications and schedule the inspections as part of the contract.
Waterproofing
Reconfiguration means new wet zones in places that were never wet before, which makes the membrane work more important rather than less. Tile is not waterproof and grout is porous, so a bonded membrane covers every wet wall and the shower floor before tile, with the pan sloped correctly and corners, changes of plane, curbs, benches and niches reinforced. We leak test before tile.
Timeline
Five to ten weeks of construction depending on how much moves, plus three to eight weeks of design, permitting and ordering ahead of it. Slab trenching adds a week or more on its own, including cure time before anything can be built on top.
Related Services
Reconfiguration is how most other bathroom projects become possible: remodeling the master bath, remodeling a small bathroom where a wall has to move, curbless and universal design bathrooms needing turning space and a wider door, converting to a wet room, and Jack-and-Jill bath renovation. If there is genuinely nowhere to take space from, see building a new bathroom. See all bathroom services.
Service Areas
We reconfigure bathrooms throughout Scottsdale, 85250 through 85269, with most of this work in the 1970s Shea Corridor and Central Scottsdale stock where original layouts no longer suit how people live. We also serve Paradise Valley, Arcadia and Fountain Hills, where split-level plans create their own layout problems. See Scottsdale Kitchen Remodeling Pros.
Why Homeowners Choose Us for Layout Work
Arizona ROC licensed, bonded and insured, with general liability coverage in force. A drawn layout with clearances and door swings before anything is ordered. An honest cost comparison between the layout you want and the layout that keeps the toilet where it is, because that single decision is usually worth $20,000. Permits filed and inspections scheduled. In-house plumbing, framing and tile crews.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to move a toilet?
On a slab-on-grade Scottsdale house, expect the reconfiguration to land in the $45,000 to $80,000 range as part of a full remodel. The slab has to be cut and trenched, new drain and vent run, inspected, then repoured. It is the most expensive move in a bathroom by a wide margin.
Can I move the shower but keep the toilet?
Yes, and it is frequently the smart compromise. Shower drains are smaller and easier to route, so you get most of the layout benefit at a substantially lower cost.
Why does everything cost more here than in other states?
Slab-on-grade construction. There is no crawlspace under a typical Phoenix-area house, so new drain runs mean cutting concrete rather than working from below.
Where can I get more space from?
A linen or hall closet backing onto the bathroom is the most common and cheapest source, since that partition is usually non-bearing with nothing plumbed in it. Taking a couple of feet from an oversized bedroom is the next option.
Do I need a permit for bathroom layout reconfiguration?
Yes. Moving drains, altering framing and adding circuits are all permitted work, with inspections at rough-in and completion. We handle it.
What is a rough-in inspection and why does it matter?
It happens after drains, vents and wiring are in and before walls are closed. Work covered without it is a real problem when you sell, and fixing it means opening finished walls.
How long does bathroom layout reconfiguration take?
Five to ten weeks of construction, plus three to eight weeks of design, permits and ordering. Slab trenching adds about a week including cure time.
Can you tell me if my wall is load-bearing?
Yes, we assess it at the estimate by looking at framing direction and what sits above. Bathroom partitions are often non-bearing but it is checked rather than assumed.

Work that pairs with this
Clients comparing options usually read remodeling a condo bathroom alongside this page, and historic and vintage bathroom renovation comes up often enough to be worth a look before you decide. If the scope turns out to be broader than one room, the guest bath is the wider version of the same conversation.
We also handle installing a backsplash and opening the kitchen to the great room. Combining a bathroom and a kitchen into one contract is easier to sequence and cheaper to mobilize than running them a year apart.
